ctag and I made an appearance at the Charger Union for the UAH Makers‘ Make-a-thon event. We gave a brief talk/tutorial about Arduino basics to an audience of a couple dozen attendees, including both UAH students and non-UAH affiliates. We also discussed how to integrate Arduino and Raspberry Pi-based trinkets into larger projects, such as for robotics or automation – as well as just for fun. Here are some shots of the event, as well as our example trinkets and projects.

This last weekend our shop had our monthly hackathon. I was pleased with all that we got accomplished. We had a wide range of projects this weekend:

  • Building a laptop stand car mount.
  • Added email support for our guest book.
  • Built leds into a handset for notifications.
  • Helped setup some gnu/linux boxes.
  • Rss filtering and aggregation.
  • Ate loads of pizza.
  • Fixed a flat panel tv with some minor adjustments.
  • Used a smudge pot to heat and blind members.
  • Fixed a stack overflow in a flight computer.
  • Worked on a two factor authentication token.
  • Using an ink jet printer to apply an etch resist to pcbs.
  • Rebuilt a reflow oven and controller.
  • Planned a film shoot.
  • Built a sword out of wood for dragoncon.
  • Freeze drying machine vacuum chamber.
  • Building better ventilation system for our laser cutter.

and finally a nice trip to ihop for the survivors of the night.

Our Hackathon started strong at 5pm with a load of rice krispy treats cookies and pizza.  It was a great success with people working on a range of projects. reprap repair, wireless mesh networking, life streaming apps, powerbolt board design, giraffe creation with a laser cutter, prop design, 555 based dice, some custom board design.  We are looking forward to our next meet up on February 25th.  Bring your ideas and projects.
