dancefloor

Members of Huntsville’s Rocket Westies, a westcoast swing dance organization, recently collaborated with members of Makers Local 256 to create a portable dance floor.  The floor was created at Makers, and made its first debut at the RW headline event, Westies on the Water, a weekend long dance event situated on lake Guntersville at Guntersville State Park.

The hutch in its final resting place.
The hutch in its final resting place.

A while back, I discovered I needed more shelving and counter top space in my kitchen, so I decided to build what you see to the right. The hutch is made of “natural”-stained red oak sanded to 600 grit with 4-5 layers of polyurethane depending on the piece. The counter top is made of manufactured granite which is really just polished concrete. The wood structure is held together with dowels and wood glue.

New member storage shelves.

Thanks to the last clean up day, and the facilities improvement fund, Makers Local 256 has added 12~15 member storage slots.

If you’d like a space, it’s first come, first serve. Just write your name or handle in on the blue tape, and put a plastic tote in your space.

Member Storage will still be at a premium, so if you aren’t really using it, or if you can split a space with someone else, you’d be helping out your fellow member(s).

We used the giant CNC table at the shop to cut out my idea for a way to stop my dog from digging out her tie out stake.  It’s a 12 inch diameter circle cut out of 1/8″ thick polycarbonate.  It has a 3/4″ diameter hole in the middle to put the corkscrew-like stake through.  No more digging!  I call it the DigStop Disk!

By cutting a special pattern into wood you can bend it into curves without any significant stress.  This is called kerfing.  There are lots of examples on the internet on doing this with saws.  We are Makers Local 256.  We do things with lasers.  Here’s our first attempt at kerfing wood with the laser cutter.  Pay no attention to the charred part.  That’s just where we didn’t pay it enough attention.  RESPECT THE LASER, CHILDREN!
