Overview

The idea here is to centralize research on methods of doing CAD.

Objectives

  • Be able to make Full use of the Shop's CNC Machines
    • Etching Electronics
    • Making and cutting out shapes
    • Imagery etching

Blender

Blender is a 3d modeling tool that can be used for CAD. It even exports to *.stl!

We used it to make a really simple part (Candy_Machine_3d_Modeled_Part).

123D

A new suite of programs from Autodesk that looks like it could be very promising. Much of it is still in Beta, so at times it may require some coaxing to get it to go. All software is free, but not open source. The suite consists of the following separate and independently usable programs:

  • 123D
    • A solid object modeling 3D editor and drawing tool.
  • 123D Make
    • A program specifically for makers and the open source hardware movement.
    • Can take 3D models and translate them into slices, lattices, g-code, and other forms which can be used to physically recreate the model with a laser cutter, CNC machine, 3D printer, etc.
  • 123D Catch
    • Can take multiple photographs of a physical object and translate them into an virtual 3D model of the object.
    • Very very cool and useful if it works well.
