As you know we competed in the Global Hackerspace Cupcake Challenge recently. Last Friday we received the cupcake from Santa Barbara Hackerspace. Here is the video and some pictures taken during the unboxing. Hope you enjoy!

SBHX's wonderful suspension system

One fine day good ol’ C-Tzar was very “disappoint” with his old game port style flight sim gaming joystick so with some fine tuned hackery he custom modified the ye olde Suncom 18 button 2 axis joystick from its original state to a new HID joystick/keyboard/mouse combo by removing all of its original components and custom designing an Atmega usb 32u4 board of his own making to control all the inputs. Its new functionality allows it to not only be a custom gaming controller but a fully functional one handed controller device for gaming and not gaming alike. These new added features allow him to setup custom schemes for older dos games allowing for easier use with games allowing mouse, keyboard, joystick or all 3 at the same time. All features are usable in and outside of games alike for easy of use with whatever applicable implementation one could think of now into the future.

Like other hackerspaces I’m finding, we have less than optimal heating and cooling. This summer, a popular complaint was that our space was too hot. We had thermometers, but you can’t read them from your appartment before you head down to the shop. Last winter, we had the same problem with the shop being too cold for happy hacking.
NOT ANY MORE! Harnessing a spare arduino and a few DS18B20+ I’ve finally built a network attached thermometer.

With the help of the following people Bob and I were able to pick up the new Soda Machine.  We hope this will make the shop a few bucks as well as be a great project for us.  We have some really unique ideas for the machine and because we got the nicest one we could, these ideas will not take too much work to implement.  Our fist step is to get the machine loaded with some drinks and figure out how everything works.  From there we can start hacking on it.

The next generation drink backpack is complete just in time for Phreaknic!

This version immerses 2 liter bottles (or whatever other bottle you want) in an ice bath. It uses compressed CO2 to force your beverage of choice out of the bottle and into the tubing for dispensing.  A whistle was added to make the venting a bit more fun and the relief valve helps prevent any disasters.
