Full Spectrum, the manufacturer of the laser cutter at Makers Local 256, held a competition for cool things made with with a laser cutter. Phil Showers submitted Scott’s robotic arm design, and won the compeition for August 2012!

Thanks to this submission, the laser cutter at the make shop will be receiving a replacement bulb, which will allow our laser cutter to cut things faster, having to make less passes with the beam.

Good job guys!

3D Scan Example

Extra bonus going-ons at the Makers Local public night this week (Tuesday, Nov 6th)!

Photographs are so passé. Videos still lack depth. We live in a three-dimensional world, so why should we represent it in just two dimensions? This week, during the normal Makers Local public night, we will have a setup that will allow you to be digitized and archived as a three-dimensional computer model!

Using the power of the Microsoft Kinect and a desktop computer, we will be making models of whoever wishes to be scanned. These models can then be imported into video games, used in animations, printed on 3D printers, and more! We can do headshots, and will hopefully be able to get some full-body model files as well.

Scanning will probably start around 7:00PM. We’ll have some snacks and sodas, and probably some extra Halloween candy, and feel free to bring your own food and treats!

Saturday I decided to laser etch some of my electronics. I etched the word “GEEK” into my laptop and hard drive. Thanks to MOG for inspiring me to etch the electronics and for helping me with GIMP. I love the way they turned out! Here of some pics:

Members at TEDx

Members of Makers Local 256 attended Huntsville’s TEDx this past Sunday.  As part of running the TEDx Lab we laser engraved our logo as well as the TEDx log onto some fig newtons.

More pictures of the event are available on facebook.
