Safe operation of a lathe requires knowledge of the machine, knowledge of proper machining techniques, a thorough understanding of the hazards, and focused attention during operation. Mistakes can damage the machine, the workpiece, tooling, the facility, and damage YOU. As an Authorized user of these machines, YOU are responsible for your safety and those around you. Safe operation cannot be emphasized enough. The lathe has no heart and it will kill you given any opportunity. Lathe injuries are common and can be servere, especially for novice users. As an Approved User, you are using this equipment AT YOUR OWN RISK. Makers Local expects YOU to be knowledgeable in the safe use of any machine before you operating it. You are strongly encouraged to seek guidance before trying to do something that you don’t understand. As the lathe is capable of seriously hurting you or others, Makers Local requires the following to become an Authorized User of the lathe. These requirements are there to help you avoid hazards and are for your protection, as well as reduce liability for the volunteers within the organization. This is especially important as the South Bend 9A is very old and relies in many ways on the operator alone for safe operation. You must: 1) be a member of Makers Local in good standing 2) have a demonstrated history of mature behavior at Makers. This includes taking care of tools and people, attentiveness and shop orderliness. Machines of this type are DANGEROUS. YOU must take responsibility for safety. 3) watch “ Lathe Fundamentals 101 Lathe Safety” by Ultimate Reloader on YouTube. (This gentleman has a long series of machinist training videos that are very informative and quite enjoyable if you have the time) 4) familiarize yourself with the South Bend 9A manual “How To Use A Lathe” This ancient document is the manufacturers guide on how to operate and maintain the machine. While out of date, this manual still provides a great deal of information on the machine. 5) complete an orientation session with a facilities area coordinator. This will include the specifics of the Makers Local 256 South Bend 9a lathe. 6) demonstrate minimum proficiency and safe operation under supervision You are strongly encouraged to search Google for “lathe accidents” and watch some of those videos.
