I took at look at the notes posted on 9/11/2007 and noticed at the bottom that you're toying with the idea of incompressible fluids(air/water). You mention that you want to build a savonius type turbine with magnets/coils integrated into the design. Would this be in addition to the generator already attached to the shaft or would it replace the generator? What benefits would a generator built onto the turbine give? Some downsides I see would be that you have to build your own generator from scratch which is likely to be less efficient than a commercial one attached to the shaft(this is probably the better of the two options). If you mean it to be in addition to the one on the shaft, it might prevent the turbine from turning at all since it would require more torque to turn(i.e. you need a heavier wind to produce energy at all). That being said, if you could manage to completely integrate the turbine and generator into one assembly with minimal losses(and keeping the generator part weatherproof), you could stand to make some money from the innovation and might want to try to get a patent on it. --Opticron 12:16, 11 September 2007 (CDT)
I was mainly talking about a tube and a sphere shaped magnet with a copper coil wrapped around portions of the tube. Something similar to a shake light but in a circle and the motion of the magnet is caused by the rotation of the savonius turbine. I know that won't generate much in terms of extra juice, but I figure why not get all you can. As far as hooking the savonius turbine up to a ganerator, there are two options. 1) Make the turbine inline with the generator's shaft, which would require a fair amount of torgue and therefore high winds and 2) Use a gear assembly to transfer the motion of the turbine 90 degrees to the generator. --strages 00:53, 12 September 2007 (CDT)
