Overview

We were donated a 3D wax printer, BPM Personal Modeler 2100 by Scott Savage of Savage Innovations. This page is a clearinghouse to hold knowledge about this printer as we dig it up and notes/coordination of the repair effort.

Known Issues

  • Wax not streaming out of head when printing. Will flush the wax, but not print with it.

Equipment Details

  • Included computer runs DOS, and the software that operates the machine runs on DOS
  • The motor control boards interface with a custom ISA controller in the machine

Progress

  • 12:50, 24 March 2010 (CDT) Replaced ISA video card, cloned original hdd onto a SD card, and replaced 15" CRT with a 15" LCD to get it up and running. Current status is that it's running and it thinks that it's printing despite not spraying any wax.
  • 12:50, 24 March 2010 (CDT) Ratmandu and Preauxphoto checked with the NASA MSFC Technical Library and rapid prototyping lab to see if they knew anything about it. While they remembered it, they had no documentation on it. They referred Ratmandu to the rp-ml list. Ratmandu and Strages joined the list.
  • 12:50, 24 March 2010 (CDT) Strages looked back through all the old threads and found a lot of discussion about the BPM 2100, from when it debuted to when the company collapsed, but no links to documentation or anything. He sent an e-mail to the list asking if anyone had any documentation but hasn't found what he's looking for yet.
  • 17:25, 24 March 2010 (CDT) Got contacted by a guy who works for a company that can repair the spray head if it turns out to be the piezo element.
  • 16:47, 7 April 2010 (CDT) E-mailed Rick Nickel about coming to troubleshoot the controller associated with the print head and offered to come to the shop any time he had to take a look at it. E-mails from the rp-ml list have gone silent but out of the ones we did get, there was a lot of information. At very least more than we already had.
  • 11:48, 8 April 2010 (CDT) Heard back from Rick. He's having a light week and says he'll stop by after work sometime this week to trouble shoot the controller board with an o-scope.
  • 18:37, 17 April 2010 (CDT) Rick is here right now tracing circuits and generally kicking ass working on the printer.  :)
