Collaborations and Classes

  • 2017.08.10: Bicycle Maintenance Class 2
  • 2017.07.07: Bicycle Maintenance Class
  • 2017.05.16: Members of Huntsville Urban Bike Share (HUBS) and Bikes and Brews social organization met to discuss collaboration opportunities. They are looking into setting up a tent at the upcoming Pig Roast, as well as hosting DIY bike maintenance classes at makers local.
    • One of the ideas was starting in July to have Bikes&Brews use the make shop as a starting location. A DIY class would be presented by their volunteers, and then the group would launch into their adventure.
      • Bikes and Brews start at ML256: July 7 2017
    • Target Audience: Casual Cyclist, low budget, "Wal-Mart" Bikes that need work
    • Long term their group is looking for a place to enable those without bikes to get a bike. We agreed makers didn't have the space for this part, but we would be ideal for DIY classes.
    • Bruce is looking into placing bicycles around town, and will be bringing by one of the Bluetooth locks he has in mind. Makers could potentially put these on a bike rack outside.
    • Brice is also looking to put repair kits around town, and potentially a vending machine with things like bicycle tubes.
    • Potential Field trip to Birmingham to discuss bike CoOp ideas with Marcus from Redemptive Cycles - http://www.redemptivecycles.com
    • Possible Maker Project - Building bike stand like the ones at STA with the Makers Local Logo. They get their metal tubing from a company in Birmingham. Will provide contact info later.
    • Discussion with Norm afterwards: Tie in a bicycle maintenance class with Boy Scouts that want to come to the shop. This would give the cyclist organizations more exposure, and the boys get a merit badge.
  • 2014.03.09: Bicycle Maintenance Class 2014
