Code of Conduct
The purpose of our Community Code of Conduct is to ensure that all participants in the Makers Local 256 community have the safest, most productive experience. We are all here to help each other learn, grow our skillsets, make neat stuff, and have a good time!
The Makers Local 256 Community Code of Conduct covers our behavior as members of the Makers Local 256 community, in any mailing list, wiki, web site, Slack workspace, IRC channel, private correspondence, public meetings, events, or real-life workspaces.
As an ever-growing community, our diverse backgrounds provide some of our greatest strengths, but our differences can also lead to communication challenges and ultimately, unhappiness. To that end, we have a few ground rules that we ask people to adhere to, to ensure that the Makers Local 256 community continues to be an excellent space in which to communicate, collaborate, and create.
This isn't an exhaustive list of things that you can't do. Rather take it as a guide, intended to make it easier to be excellent to each other. It should be followed in spirit as much as in the letter.

Be respectful.
Not all of us will agree all the time, but disagreement is no excuse for poor behavior and poor manners. We all experience some frustration now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration to turn into a personal attack. It's important to remember that a community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one. We expect members of the Makers Local 256 community to be respectful when communicating with other community members, as well as with people outside the Makers Local 256 community.
Be nice.
Everyone in the Makers Local 256 community should feel welcome, regardless of their background. Please be courteous, respectful and polite to fellow community members.
Examples of things to avoid:
- offensive comments related to gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion
- unwelcome display of sexual imagery
- real or implied violence, intimidation, oppression, stalking,
- harassing photography or recording
- sustained disruption of discussions or other work
- inappropriate physical contact
- unwelcome sexual attention
Be considerate.
We’re all in this together. We share the same space, the same resources, and sometimes, the same ideas and projects. There will be times where the tool or work area that you want to use won’t be available. Everyone needs to be as considerate as possible with their own use of resources, but we also need need to be considerate of others when it’s their turn. If you’re using a tool or workspace, be on the lookout for others who also need that resource. If you know you have a large project that will tie up resources for a bit, try to let others know so that they can plan accordingly. Communication can go a long way in making sure that everyone gets the access that they need.
Be safe.
We have a lot of really powerful, but potentially dangerous tools available for our community to use. It is critical that everyone is aware when these tools are being used, so that we can maintain a safe working environment. Let those around you know if you are about to use a loud or dangerous tool, which will allow them to be prepared for the situation. If someone is using a tool in a dangerous manner, let them know; even experienced tool-users can learn new, safer ways to use our resources.
Be informed.
Asking questions early can avoid many problems later. When you are unsure about a situation, ask questions. They may need to be directed to appropriate forum, but those who are asked should be responsive and helpful.
Be responsible.
We must take responsibility for our words and our actions. We all make mistakes; when we do, we should take responsibility for them. If someone has been harmed or offended, we should listen carefully and respectfully work to right the wrong.
If you need help:
