A 3D printer capable of printing parts to make another identical 3D printer.


The Plan

  • I'd like to use 3rd generation electronics, namely what the Makerbot Cupcake CNC is using, just to stay ahead of the curve.
  • Heated bed to allow for a wider variety of printing medium usage and to prevent warping of the printed objects.
  • Different heads after the initial build to give it some added flexibility/capability. See Options section for more details.



  • 11:18, 23 March 2010 (CDT) : Plastic structural parts printed on another reprap located in the Czech Republic have been obtained.
    • Cost: $220 shipping included.
  • 11:50, 8 April 2010 (CDT) Gathered two stepper motors with a 0.9 degree/step rating that might work for the X and Y axis.
  • Phil says he has all the bearings needed and is willing to use the electronics from the Makerbot Cupcake CNC that he bought to get one built. It was his original plan. We also might have another person willing to help in the building experience. --strages 22:20, 13 September 2010 (CDT)
    • Looking into(i.e. "have emailed") getting fasteners + bars from Huntsville Fasteners (re: shopping locally as per conversation 9/13/10) -- Phil 17:48, 15 September 2010 (CDT)
  • 20 September 2010 - Fasteners ordered from Huntsville Fasteners.
  • 10:27, 21 September 2010 (CDT) - Belts and Washers that HuntFast couldn't get ordered from McMaster-Carr.
    • 22 September 2010 (CDT) - McMaster-Carr Order arrived. (impressive shipping speed!)
  • This leaves the Bar & Threaded stock and the Thick Sheet (control board backing & print surface backing) - All are believed to be available from Home Depot or Lowes.
    • Phil: Found Bars in McMaster (finally). Ordered parts - expect them to arrive (7 or 8 OCT 10)
  • 01:13, 4 December 2010 (CST) Updating since it hasn't been updated in a while, here's what's been going on. All the parts have been obtained and Phil and Raymond have been assembling it slowly but surely. The X axis is together along with most of the outer structure. It's really starting to looking like a 3D printer now instead of a handful of parts in a box. Work will likely pick back up after the first of the year due to holidays.
  • 19:03, 16 April 2011 (CDT) Took apart a rather large HP printer with Tony and managed to find another 0.9 degree/step motor to compliment the other two. We now have all three axis with double precision.

  • Possible Complication: I'm not sure if the Makerbot's Extruder is "plug and play" with the Mendel (though after a cursory examination, I strongly doubt it.)
