Makers take over a local dollar movie theater for an evening, showing a film of their choosing.
+
At first we considered renting a dollar theater for a night, but they wanted $500 to show our own movie, and then we'd have to have our own copy of the film.  After researching other possibilities like UAH's Chan auditorium or their UC, the most cost effective solution seems to be The Flying Monkey, especially since they will let us have food and drink, including alcohol, during the show. We can also sell our own concessions.  Normally they would ask us to be done before midnight, but they make an exception for the first Friday every month.
We can raise money for the shop by splitting the door with the theater.

To bring in the maker side, we could tie in one of strages' ideas to have a chat feed at the bottom of the screen. Maybe twitter? Show some short video clips of projects at the shop?  Short commercial with real and fake projects for laughs?

The theater will be more or less expensive depending on the date/timeIt is more expensive on weekends, and even more expensive depending on what major movies are being released that weekThere is no clear pricing sheet, it's done based on speculation for what the theater would stand to make with a regular showing at that time, and they charge us whatever they would need to break even.

MrWorld is looking for contact info to ask about screening a movie at the Flying Monkey.  They might refuse simply because we'd be doing a fundraiser for another community center at their donation driven community center, but it won't hurt to ask.  They've been contacted as of Wednesday July 7.

On another note, an event at the Flying Monkey could bring in a different audience and take advantage of their advertising, but we could do something similar enough in the Makers Local parking lot.  If we park cars on the other side of the building, we could show public domain movies on the side of the building.

Tickets could be super cheap, or we could sell concessions both?  If Mog could continue making bumps, other projects implemented, it could vindicate the cost ($3?) to an audience. We could put cars on the other side of the building, limited parking on the south side with the garage door, and have seets, camping folding chairs and what have you.  Even if this event has limited attendance, it would cost almost nothing to run so it would be pure profit.  And if we're showing short videos about projects before the movie, it adds to the pr aspect once we get people in the parking lot.  I think we could promote this well with the group at the Flying Monkey

===Format===

The cheaper rooms we'd be interested in are 35mm projectors, so that's the format we need.  They have other rooms with digital projection, but they are obviously much more expensive because they're usually showing bigger major releases in those rooms.

Description

At first we considered renting a dollar theater for a night, but they wanted $500 to show our own movie, and then we'd have to have our own copy of the film. After researching other possibilities like UAH's Chan auditorium or their UC, the most cost effective solution seems to be The Flying Monkey, especially since they will let us have food and drink, including alcohol, during the show. We can also sell our own concessions. Normally they would ask us to be done before midnight, but they make an exception for the first Friday every month.

The Flying Monkey will rent their 2nd floor theater for $235, and after you pay your deposit they will add your event to their marketing efforts.

Cost

Mog reports that the cost of getting the license to show The Room is $300, and the theater booking is $235, so the total cost is now $535. We could still turn a profit on the event if we get more than 50 people to show up, which can probably be easily accomplished. The Monkey's representative, Anna Sue, said the theater had a seating capacity of 250, which means if we fill the space half-full we can still make some profit for the shop. But we will need members to help split the up-front costs of the event. Feel free to add yourself to the list-

  • MrWorld

Volunteers

In addition to financial support, we'll need general volunteers to do things like put up fliers, send press releases, provide concessions, and we'll definitely want to clean up all the plastic spoons after the movie. We'd also like to sell concessions, nothing cooked but selling candy bars and soda from costco for $1 each would be fine. We'd like to make a run to Costco or Sam's beforehand and pick up all some basics. There will be a short presentation at the start of the screening about Makers Local 256 and what we do, accompanied by crashcartpro's photo montage.
