Advantage of Policies
Passing Bylaws Changes through the board can be a lengthy and potentially costly process (we have to pay to file bylaws amendments with the city). Policies bring to the organization a more flexible and quick solution for getting basic procedures communicated to the membership.
Ideas for how to manage policies
- Establish definition of a policy
- Idea: "Policies" are member generated. Rules are policies the board have voted on to resolve contested policies.
- Establish what procedures constitute an accepted policy
- Idea: Accepted policies are emailed to the members list AND are not contested via email within X amount of time. Signs may be used to inform members of active policies.
- Establish how to challenge an existing policy
- Idea: Policies are contested informally via email until the policy is agreed upon, or until a member requests a board vote.
- Establish what procedure to follow for policy non-compliance
- Active Policies that are not followed can use the existing Actionable Offense methods outlined in the Bylaws
- Establish how to communicate policies to new members
- Idea: Make reviewing the policies wiki page part of the new member "welcome email."
