What It Is

This page is to help people and projects share resources to obtain equipment and material based on a voting and cost metric. If enough people vote for a piece of equipment or material and enough money has been donated towards its purchase, then each month, the Facilities Committee will pay for the rest of its cost based on available money in the Tool Fund.

How It Works

The metric for purchase works as so:

  • Cost = cost of equipment or material
  • Donations = amount of money received for equipment or material
  • Voters = number of people who have voted for equipment or material

X = (Cost - Donations)/Voters <- The Cost to FC/Person

When X <= $20.00/person, then the equipment or material will be purchased. <- Please take note that this number may change as this page is experimental.

Special thanks to Opticron for developing this metric.

How To Use

If you want a piece of equipment or material, post it on the list below in the appropriate category with how much it costs with tax and where it can be obtained. State what you plan to use it for along with your username. Each username posted counts as a vote for the item. Also, please donate or pledge money towards its purchase. You may do so by declaring your pledge below or depositing money earmarked for the equipment in our shop's donation box.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A donation or pledge for an item is independent from your monthly pledged donation to the shop.

The day an item has an X value equal to or less than the stated Cost to FC/Person, pledged funds must be deposited to the donation box within a week. If they are not received by that time period, the pledged funds will be dropped from the X value calculation.

Priority for the purchase of items that have reached the required X value will be given in the chronological order by which all pledged funds have been received.

The Basics category is for everyday items that are necessary for the shop; e.g. paper towels, toilet paper, first aid & safety gear, etc.. They are independent from the voting metric and will be purchased immediately by FC.

Current Facilities Committee Funds

Current Funds: $150.00
Please support this effort by donating to the FC Fund Pot:

  • $50.00 pledged by Spacefelix, will arrive 10/20.
  • The $100 donated during the hackerspace meetup has been allocated toward the tool fund. --Opticron 20:42, 20 October 2009 (CDT)

Shop Equipment

A Ratchet and Socket Set - Purchased 2/10, Will Arrive 3/10

We need a good set of six point SAE and metric sockets, a few accessories like extenders and ujoints, and a decent ratchet to go with them. A ratchet and size converter would be a good start. From Harbor Freight for $12.99 - http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=35338

Shelving & Bins - Under Construction

We need more shelving, with containers on them. This is something we can do on the cheap, and will give up less clutter. I would like to see the shelving go up along the right wall from the front of the shop until the first window. This would allow us to have useful items right there in the main room.

  • Other Resources
    • Spacefelix is building one from old wire racks and scrap 2x4s, pallets and plywood.
    • Have enough scrap material to build shelves on our own. --Spacefelix 23:32, 22 February 2010 (CST)
    • I saw some large wooden shelves outside the Express Oil Change on sullivan (near the railroad tracks). It was actually outside the establishment next to the oil change place. I don't know if they're for grabs, but they're currently exposed to the weather, so if we asked they might let us haul them off. Custom shelving is always good too. • There's a really cheap furniture place on 72 by Sparkman, in the shopping center with the Papa Johns. I've found sturdy, ultra cheap stuff there before. Of course I'm not sure if that's cheaper than building it ourselves. MrWorld

Chemical Cabinet - Under Construction

Lockable, well ventilated cabinet for storage of various chemicals at the shop for varying purposes. Examples: polyvinyl alcohol, hydrochloric acid, high grade isopropyl alcohol, etc.

Rolling Pegboard - Gathering Materials

  • Other Resources
    • Needs to have materials gathered. Spacefelix will check out leftovers from shelf building and salvage from dumpster dives.

Software Development Tables

Table for just sitting down with a computer and programming that can be raised and lowered on jackscrews for ergonomics. Would have outlets, lights and other conveniences for computers and other sit-down tasks. Could be placed in library since the shop floor is starting to reach capacity. Current high tables on shop floor great for working, but can get uncomfortable for sit-down tasks. Need a low table with chairs with back support.

  • Votes & Donations
  • X = $?.??/person - Buy or build?
  • Other Resources
    • Kit out and use the current low table on the shop floor? May not always be available since it is on main floor.
    • Maybe we can get something from our dumpster diving trips.
