Talk:Marketing Venues
First off, do we get to see our own press release before it goes out? --strages 09:46, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- I'm Pretty Sure we will get them, What i want to know is, where will the PR be posted in order to be reviewed? will it have its own wiki page or will it be here? --Preauxphoto 10:18, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- Nothing's getting my approval until we have discussed our expectations with Trevor, and I have read and discussed any planned document. I am confident the rest of the board would agree. Brian is working on scheduling a meeting with him. --Dickie 10:54, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- Considering we've heard twice now that there's a press release made for us and now we're talking marketing venues, I just wanted some clarification as to whether everyone gets to review the press release or whether it was reviewed by the board instead. No offense taken. --strages 10:21, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- I've pondered this myself. Here's my initial opinion: If the initial release is an introduction to the community, we let the board handle it. This is just to avoid having too many cooks in the kitchen. However, I feel that it would be irresponsible of me, personally, not to seek the advice of some of our veteran/founding members. Should it be posted on the wiki before going public? I say "not necessarily", but it can be argued that those reviewing it on the wiki before publication would be those involved directly or indirectly in the review, so I'm on the fence. Further press releases involving events or projects should involve the board and the project/event coordinators. --Dickie 10:54, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- My concerns are inaccuracies, something which has happened in the past. Trevor isn't a member and I've not heard where/who he's been getting information from. --strages 11:03, 14 July 2010 (CDT)

Given those websites, what is hoped to be accomplished by sending a press release about our group in general rather than a particular project or event? --strages 09:46, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- General knowledge of out existence, many times people will send work, information, and donations/sponsorship possibilities but they cant do that if they don't know we exist. General information often causes curiosity, we might get a fluff piece out of it, and we can easily send them specific project information along with the PR. --Preauxphoto 10:07, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- These particular outlets may serve us better if we send them news of our projects and events rather than an introduction. --Dickie 10:54, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
Focus on local. Local news, local websites, local groups. In the end, members are going to be in our area. --strages 11:30, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
- As Brokentrace pointed out in his most recent edit without really saying as much.
- As a side note, don't discount a larger audience by not posting on Hack A Day and other similar websites. My first knowledge of Makers Local 256 was the Hack A Day posting about the USB Door Lock. I think that both avenues need to be used, both local and global. --Brokentrace 11:46, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
The press releases would be issued to each publication for each event, in the hopes of getting some media coverage. Other organizations and individuals would receive invitations to participate in the event. There are no "general" press releases, they're only issued about specific things we want to point out to people. We're focusing on local publications, but local makers read larger scale publications too. Obviously members get to see the press releases, but nobody else has volunteered to help write it, so it's the two of us working on it right now. What we come up with will be shared with everyone and it'll be discussed as a group before we start sending them, a part of that was supposed to be on Monday. Since Trevor got held up late at work getting ready for the primary run-off, we'll probably have another get together in the next week or so to share what we're doing with members. It'll be a lot like the last one we had. Also, Trevor has been by the shop intermittently, three times since the last meeting, and he has an application waiting for another board member to support him. MrWorld 17:13, 14 July 2010 (CDT)
