What It Is

This page is to help people and projects share resources to obtain equipment and material based on a voting and cost metric. If enough people vote for a piece of equipment or material and enough money has been donated towards its purchase, then each month, the Facilities Committee will have the current treasurer pay for the rest of its cost based on available money in the Tool Fund. Alternatively, it can be built by members, salvaged or donated.

How It Works

  1. Member puts down something they want with cost and where it can be had.
  2. Other members contribute by:
    • Listing their usernames to vote for it.
    • Contribute money towards its purchase (independent from members' monthly pledged donations to the shop). Earmark it and put it in the donation box.
    • Note down alternative ways it can be had or built.
  3. If it can only be bought, the metric for purchase is calculated as so:
    X = (Cost - Donations)/Voters
Cost = cost of equipment or material
Donations = amount of money received for equipment or material
Voters = number of people who have voted for equipment or material
  4. When X <= $20.00/person, then the equipment or material will be purchased during the next Member's Meeting. Priority will be given to items that reach the X value above first. However, Basics will always have first priority.

Special thanks to Opticron for developing this metric.

Basics - 1st Purchase Priority

  • Safety Gear
    • Fire Extinguishers - Can be bought or salvaged. Broken Trace mentioned that his company was getting rid of some 10 lb ABC extinguishers. We could salvage them and refill them for cheap.
    • Smoke Detectors
    • Per 3/10 Member's Meeting.
  • Toilet Paper
  • Paper Towels
  • Trash Bags

Shop Equipment

New Chain for Chainsaw

Chainsaw chain is worn, needs replacement. Blade is 18 inches. Also, chain oil must be purchased with the chain and appropriate fuel-oil mixture to fuel the chainsaw.

Hammer Drill

Will need one to help with putting shelving on walls.

Additional Library Shelving - Will Be Built

Build shelving similar to what Gregabyte built in the library. It will extend the current shelving to the ceiling.

  • X = $0.00 - Will be built by members. --CrashCart 17:37, 9 March 2010 (CST)

    • Spacefelix will be following Gregabyte's current construction, will be built mainly of extra wood from wood pile and store-bought material.

Garage Workbenches - Under Construction

Heavy tables for tool work in the garage area. Similar to main room tables, but will be equipped with vises, power strips and a hardened top that will allow for markerboarding, but still be able to resist being burned by grinding and welding sparks and flame.

  • X = $0.00 - Will be built by members. --CrashCart 17:37, 9 March 2010 (CST)

    • Gregabyte built one. Will build more when wood becomes available.

Material Rack - Will Be Built

A vertical-horizontal storage rack in the Southeast corner of the storeroom for containing the wood, metal, foam, glass, cardboard and plastic materials we have; long, short and scrap.

  • X = $0.00 - Will be built by members. --CrashCart 17:37, 9 March 2010 (CST)
  • Other Resources
    • Spacefelix has made blueprints, will be built mainly of wire racks welded together.

Whiteboard Coffee/Dev Table - Will Be Built

There is enough space in the library to put down a coffee table once the cardboard storage is moved downstairs to the material rack. It would just be a coffee table version of the main floor tables with networking and power. Possibly even a magnifying light for small work.

Integrated Shelving & Worktables - Blueprints Being Worked

To help alleviate space issues, there will be a set of shelves placed in the main room that will double as workbenches.

    • CrashCart and Katy are working on blueprints.

Software Development Tables - Under Construction

Table for just sitting down with a computer and programming. Would have outlets, lights and other conveniences for computers and other sit-down tasks. Could be placed in library since the shop floor is starting to reach capacity. Current high tables on shop floor great for working, but can get uncomfortable for sit-down tasks. Need a low table with chairs with back support.

Shelving & Bins - Under Construction

We need more shelving, with containers on them. This is something we can do on the cheap, and will give up less clutter. I would like to see the shelving go up along the right wall from the front of the shop until the first window. This would allow us to have useful items right there in the main room. They ought to hold anything from member's project boxes to banker boxes.

    • Spacefelix and Katy are building some from scrap 2x4's and plywood/particleboard. So far have built a small two-decker that can hold six project boxes (four up and two on the floor below). Will later build a three-decker that will hold 16 project boxes; four on the floor and four on each of the three-decks.
    • Have enough scrap material to build shelves on our own. --CrashCart 23:32, 22 February 2010 (CST)
    • I saw some large wooden shelves outside the Express Oil Change on sullivan (near the railroad tracks). It was actually outside the establishment next to the oil change place. I don't know if they're for grabs, but they're currently exposed to the weather, so if we asked they might let us haul them off. Custom shelving is always good too. • There's a really cheap furniture place on 72 by Sparkman, in the shopping center with the Papa Johns. I've found sturdy, ultra cheap stuff there before. Of course I'm not sure if that's cheaper than building it ourselves. MrWorld

A Ratchet and Socket Set - Purchased 2/10, Will Arrive 3/10

We need a good set of six point SAE and metric sockets, a few accessories like extenders and ujoints, and a decent ratchet to go with them. A ratchet and size converter would be a good start. From Harbor Freight for $12.99 - http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=35338

  • Votes & Donations
  • X = $12.99/person

Material

Can Be Had From Salvage Items & Dumpster Dives

  • Common Electronic Components
  • Electronics Wire
  • Mechanical Components
  • Project Cases

Tool Fund

Ask the current treasurer (CrashCart) about money and making purchases from the tool fund.
